Best of the Best Year Yet! {Calgary wedding and portrait photography}

When 2012 was nearing, there were lots of comments about saying good riddance to 2011. I get that, some years are definitely better than others. For me though, 2011 was by far one of my most favourite EVER. And that’s including my personal and professional lives. Coming into 2012, I feel really alive, like I can conquer anything and I hope to continue to ride that feeling well into the future. 2011 was a very cool year. I traveled A LOT. My wedding photography took me to Whonnock Lake in beautiful British Columbia, brought me back home to the city and the mountains numerous times and sent me allllll the way to Scotland and Vermont. This year I witnessed not one, but TWO proposals; one of them was my own brother’s, the other I can’t share yet. I’ve met so many beautiful families and couples and have loved being included in their lives. If 2012 is anything like 2011, well, bring it on! Enjoy this (a bit random) look into my favourite engagement and wedding images from the past year.

Shandell & Kent -Engaged! {Calgary wedding photographer}

Sigh. I miss fall already! It’s been a few weeks since Shandell and Kent’s e-session (if you want to see my newest and latest work check my facebook page first! And so as I’m skimming back through the images to post them here, it makes me a little sad to see the leaves go. I swear I have this conversation over and over every single year about how I can’t believe winter is coming so fast, it’s so dark etc etc, and I find it remarkable that it always seems to surprise me year after year. Regardless of winter’s arrival, I have beautiful photos of a beautiful couple to remind me that the darkness will indeed end and bring with it that warm glow and golden leaves once again. I got to use Shandell’s family farm for the shoot and it was a treasure trove of fun for a photographer like me. If not for the fading light, I could have kept shooting for hours on end. You two are the sweetest and I cannot wait to photograph your wedding!

Shirley & Raf – Engaged! {Calgary Engagement photography}

Shirley and Raf brought something special to their engagement session: Shirley’s mom! I’m not sure how it’s possible for so much energy and charisma to emanate from someone so, well, little! Before I put my foot completely in my mouth, I could instantly see where Shirley got her beauty and personality from. 🙂 From the moment we started shooting, there was constant laughter and gorgeous light to capture it all. I think one of my most favourite photographs of all time came right at the end. Shirley and Raf love the Calgary skyline and so we made our way to Scotsman’s Hill. As they sat on the bench admiring the sunset and the buildings, I couldn’t help but wonder how the skyline will change along with this beautiful couple. I have challenged them to a free session, 30 years from now in the exact same spot. 2041 isn’t that far away now is it?!

forever captured: the proposal {Calgary Wedding Photography}

forever captured: the proposal {Calgary Wedding Photography}

I have been absolutely dying to share this photo but I couldn’t until today. The reason is because secretly my brother had asked that I photograph his proposal so that he would be able to present the images to his fiance at a later date. And today was that happy day! I spent the day teaching them photography and used the last critique of the day’s images to lead into the reveal. It was such a cool and (nerve-wracking!) feeling to be able to provide something tangible from  a life-changing, but quite fleeting moment. It wasn’t until I found myself back safely in my car, looking through the images, that I fully realized what I had been able to do, what I had just witnessed…. Cue some happy sobs! Definitely a huge highlight in my life and career.

Isaac & Melissa -Engaged! {Calgary Engagement photography}

Just a little over eight months ago, my brother Isaac’s life was changed by a single solitary hug from a wonderful woman named Melissa. A month after their first meeting, my family met her and we knew she was the one. We could see it, we could feel it, we were witness to a complete, instant, forever-kind-of-love. Their relationship was the culmination of a year of change for Isaac. I am a big believer in the universe: that when you make changes to make your life happier and better, good things come your way. Melissa is better than a good thing; she has made my brother happier than I have ever seen him. I am so thrilled to have a sister (inlaw) and my entire family resoundingly seconds that statement. I cannot wait to celebrate with you!  Love you both.
